Fun fact about me: if I get a hankering for a juicy portion of burger, my first stop would very rarely be a fast food joint.

I hold a lot more faith in speciality burger spots due to the pride they have in serving top quality patties and taking charge of creative licence.

New to the Baker & Cook family, is a burger haunt that’ll soon become your favourite — Mo & Jo Sourdough Burgers, nestled in the Greenwood Avenue ‘hood.

Having already had an unforgettable taste of their sourdough pizzas at Plank, I already had a hunch I’d be pretty impressed by the burgers here.

Mo & Jo Sourdough Burgers’ menu is concise and features an array of flavours to suit all palates. In fact, they even chose to make their boozy mark by creating their own bottle of Baker Boy Summer Ale (S$10.50).

It went down exceptionally crisp (especially when chilled), it was sweet and not overly hoppy. I could’ve easily downed a few, no sweat.

For those preferring a more classic pairing of burgers, shakes and fries, they also a selection of milkshakes made with soft serve ice cream. I tried the Caramel (S$10), and almost expected an overwhelming, sickly sweetness.

It was anything but! Instead, I was met with a creamy, sweet and subtly salty dessert beverage that proved to be highly addictive.

All burgers are served solo, with the option to add on sides and trimmings, such as fried egg, bacon, cheese, beetroot, and even an extra patty for a nominal fee.

Like all places, they hope you enjoy the burger as is, but in case you need to add some oomph to your burger, there’s a “pimp your burger” station!

The Babe (S$19), made with pulled pork, BBQ sauce and herby mayonnaise is for those unafraid of getting down and dirty with their burger. The homemade BBQ wasn’t as sticky as traditional off-the-shelf types, which was honestly a godsend.

It was smoky and had an edge of sourness, which really complemented the richness of the fork-tender pulled pork. I also liked the fact that the buns didn’t go limp, despite the immense slathering of sauce.

Get a taste of the Caribbean with the Jamaican (S$16), which is stacked with grilled chicken breast, jerk relish, lime mayonnaise and pineapple.

Now, the question many may ask is, “Do pineapples belong in burgers?” Personally, with the right combination, it’s a winner!

This one was one of them as the jerk relish proved to pack a bit of heat, and the sweet acidity of the pineapple helped combat that. The addition of pineapple also made every bite as juicy as the last, right till the last mouthful.

Pescetarians aren’t forgotten with The Barra (S$20) that features a Grilled Aussie Kuhlbarra Kimberley barramundi, lemon and caper mayonnaise, and tomato relish.

For someone who almost always gravitates towards a meat burger, this one was actually my favourite of the lot.

The flesh was immensely flaky, while the tomato relish lent the burger a sweet acidity that balanced all the flavours. So far, the one thing I really appreciated, was that all the buns held up despite the amount of sauce that was dribbling down my hand.

Of course, there’s no way that I would go without trying Mo & Jo Sourdough Burgers’ version of a classic burger with the Jo (S$18). Made with a beef patty, cheddar, house mayonnaise, mustard, and tomato relish, this has all the makings to satisfy your burger cravings.

Cooked to medium, the patty retained its moisture and was full of flavour despite its simplicity. I could’ve gone for an additional fried egg, because I’m greedy like that, but this was more than sufficient in keeping me satiated.

To complete your meal, don’t forget to order one of their sides, (from left to right) Curly Fries (S$6.50), Mo & Jo Caesar Salad (S$6) and Sweet Potato Fries (S$7).

Out of the three, the Sweet Potato Fries would be my favourite because it’s not readily available at every burger place, and these were crispy, sweet and best eaten when piping hot!

If you’ve managed to set enough space aside for dessert, do order their Apple & Cherry Pie With Soft Serve (S$8.50). The portion is sufficient for one person, which made me so happy that I didn’t need to share!

The crust crumbled on that first cut with my fork and melted like butter on the first bite. The cherry was aptly tart, but I did wish that the filling was less chunky and mushier.

Needless to say, the soft serve was a luscious partner to the crushed mini pie, and within three minutes, the plate was licked clean.

There’s little chance of missing Mo & Jo Sourdough Burgers’ clean and bright shopfront, and I especially loved how intimate and up-close you can get to the grill. The casual dining arrangement marries the uncomplicated nature of the burgers themselves.

Even after trying quite a few of their burgers already, I could definitely see myself coming back for more.
