10 Places To Eat At In Pasir Ris That’ll Make Your Trip To The East Of The East Worthwhile

It goes without saying that us Singaporeans devote a lot our time and passion into food, endlessly scrolling through blogs and skimming through reviews in search of new eateries.

As soon as the food is out of reach, however, we take a step back, contemplating whether it’s worth the hour or more MRT ride to the destination. Well, these 10 places to eat at in Pasir Ris will make those minutes (or an hour plus) so worth it!

Sit down, be humble. Take a seat at Humble Burger for burgers that aren’t quite humble in size. Housed in Pasir Ris Central Hawker Centre, the stall sports a neon burger on its signboard, in line with the food centre’s hipster vibes.

Their die-die must try Chicken Rice Burger (S$5.50) comes stacked with a slab of tender soy sauce chicken slathered in ginger and chilli garlic sauce on a bed of lettuce, sandwiched between golden-brown fried rice ‘buns’ made with real chicken rice.

You’ll get that familiar fragrance of our classic dish with every bite, followed by the tang and mild spiciness from the sauce.

To slurp up a bowl of steaming hot ramen in Singapore, we definitely need the air-con or we’d die from melting in the heat. Thankfully, Wakon Ramen serves an array of ramen dishes and is situated at Coffee Express 2000 which has air-conditioning.

And if you’re having something spicy like this Volcano Seafood Ramen (S$9.90), all the more reason you’d breathe a sigh of relief. Similar to mee kia, the noodles were springy with a firm bite, while the scallops, squids and prawn were fresh to the taste.

The spicy broth had intense spiciness and a great depth of flavour. The ajitsuke tamago may help dull the scrumptious spice burning your tongue.

I’m all about customising meals and at Wa Bento, which opened in early 2018, you can enjoy customisable bento sets, whether it be curry rice and soba or pork belly chops and unagi. 

But for those who are indecisive and are afraid of dawdling in line, the Mini Kaisen Don (S$5.90) comes prepared with an assortment of salmon, tuna, octopus and prawns, then topped with a generous mountain of tobiko. 

The crunch from the edamame along with fresh sashimi make it the perfect pick-me-up chirashi don at an affordable price.

4. Cottage Pies Cafe

For a simple yet gratifying snack, Cottage Pies Cafe freshly bakes New Zealand-style crispy pastries that taste just like the warm pies our grandmas bake. Choose from a selection of chicken and beef pies, tuna puffs, vegetarian pies and sweets.

Packed with tender chicken, diced carrots, corn and peas, the Chicken Pie (One for S$1.50, Three for S$4.20) had lovely flakey layers of buttery goodness. All the pastries are made on-site and chomping away will make you feel somewhat nostalgic.

You’ve heard of shopaholics (and alcoholics) and you may even be one but what about Prawnaholic?

Offering prawn mee with a modern twist, the store always has a queue during lunch and dinner hours, eager individuals lining up to try their hyped Kurobuta pork belly served alongside the prawns.

The “King” in the King Prawn Noodles (S$8.50) is really legit with two giant king prawns propped up in the bowl of noodles that are coated in house-made dark soya sauce with added pork belly chunks.

Sprinkled atop is sakura prawns for the crunch and even some hae bee hiam (spicy shrimp sambal). The fat prawns were juicy and paired magnificently with the sweet and salty noodles, mingled with the kick of spice from the sambal.

6. Binggo

Cool down from your long journey to the East with bingsoo on the go at Binggo, where specially-crafted shaved ice with colourful toppings of tart fruits, condensed milk and sweets are created for a sugary treat.

While there are classics like the Injeolmi, there are also a wide variety of contemporary flavours like the Cookies N’ Cream bingsoo. 

Balanced on a base of milk snow ice lightly dusted with green tea powder and almonds is sticky sweet pat (red bean) paste with a huge scoop of green tea ice cream.

This Green Tea Pat Beansoo (S$6.90) will satisfy your sweet tooth with the ideal mixture of milky and sweet. Carry this around on the streets and scoop it up in your mouth for a brief respite from the heat.

Yet another hipster hawker stall worth visiting in Pasir Ris is Daburu which serves up hefty hot buns and sizzling hot plates of Western chow.

‘Daburu’ means “double” in Japanese, so the eatery presents buns and plates double the size than what you’re used to which also doubles the fun of wolfing down the meal.

The Deluxe Pork Belly & Hamburg Hot Bun (S$7.90) will make you gape at the sheer size of the hot bun — stacked with two long pork belly slices and a beef patty, further garnished with caramelised onions and sweet mayo, it’s barely sandwiched together by buttered oval-shaped buns.

Sous vide for 24 hours and seared for a crispy layer, the fats and meat are melt-in-the-mouth followed by a zesty finish with the mayo.

8. Mukshidonna

Korean food is now pretty much a staple in our Singaporean diet and at E!Avenue shopping mall, Mukshidonna is the place to eat (muk), rest (shi), pay (don), leave (na).

The halal-certified restaurant is famous for their army stews with tteok-bokki and fish cakes along with plenty of topping choices to simmer in the spicy soup.

Gather your friends and family to share the Budae Jjigae (S$13.90++ per pax) and opt for soup bases which include beef and mussels. And what’s army stew without ramyun noodles?

For an additional S$3, you’ll have those chewy noodles soaked in the spicy broth and other toppings like cheese, dumplings and sausages. To deepen the flavour of the soup, add fresh mussels to the pot and your tastebuds will have a daebak time.

Tasty tiger prawn and Iberico braised pork bowls are made affordable at Tasty Street, and it’s uncommon to come across hawkers promising premium food at such prices.

Their Asian-style grain bowls are served with the same base of a mix of brown and Japanese pearl rice plus an onsen egg which jiggles atop and different greens which vary on a daily basis.

The Iberico Lor Bah Bowl (S$6.50) we had was plated with charred corn, balsamic purple cabbage and stir-fried chye sim, variegated in yellow, purple and green.

After being braised for 48 long hours in a Chinese braising sauce, the Spanish Iberico pork effortlessly melted in our mouths, balanced with lean meat to avoid becoming too jelak, befitting the stall’s name: tasty.

10. Rice & Box

Boxed food just makes everything convenient for all the busybees out there, but sometimes the grub falls behind, whether in terms of the freshness or the flavour.

At the takeaway kiosk Rice & Box, you’ll leave with a hot box filled with a generous amount of your order, both fresh and appetising in hand.

Voted #1 choice on the menu, the Laksa Prawn (S$7.90) pasta had noodles thoroughly immersed in the pungent laksa sauce with five plump prawns.

Pleasant coconut notes together with the spice from the laksa paired perfectly together, and the prawns were truly fresh and juicy. If you’re yearning for something fiery, this pasta will make you happy and is well worth the journey.
