Vacation deprivation is on the rise across the globe. According to the recently-released Expedia.com.sg® 2017 Vacation Deprivation Study, which looked at the vacation habits of over 15,000 working adults across 30 countries globally, 53% of full-time working adults globally feel vacation-deprived in 2017, up from 49% in 2016.
As one of the most developed cities in Asia, there is no doubt that the people of Singapore live a fast-paced life. However, when it comes to balancing work and play, it seems like Singaporeans know the key to living a balanced life and are doing better than most in the region. According to the study, 57% of Singaporeans feel deprived of vacations – a significantly lower % age compared to the overall sentiments in markets such as South Korea (81%), Malaysia (65%), Hong Kong (64%), India (60%) and United Arab Emirates (60%).
While this is so, the proportion of vacation-deprived workers still form the majority of employees here in Singapore. With that said, are you one of the vacation-deprived workers in Singapore? How do you know if you need to go for a vacation now rather than later?
Here are five signs that show that you need to go for a vacation ASAP.
1. You are CONSTANTLY DREAMING about a vacation
Longing to feel the ocean breeze in your hair and the sand in your toes while sitting at your work desk is a sure sign that you’re in need of a vacation. 56% Singaporeans surveyed in Expedia.com.sg®’s 2017 Vacation Deprivation Study spend time at work DREAMING about vacations, and an even larger group – 63% – spend time planning their vacation at work. If you’re one of them, why not take a vacation at the next available long weekend to give your mind and body a short break from work?
2. Every Molehill Becomes a MOUNTAIN
If even the slightest of things – such as your colleague typing too loudly on their keyboard or ignoring your suggestion at a meeting – irritates you to no end, it’s time to plan for your next holiday sooner rather than later. If not, amicable discussions may turn into never-ending arguments and you may end up being too hard on yourself when the root of the issue could be easily resolved.
If you think that taking a break is being irresponsible, Expedia.com.sg®’s 2017 Vacation Deprivation Study says otherwise. According to the Study, 45% of Singapore workers said that they come back from vacations more focused, 44% return more productive and 41% come back to work with a better attitude. Hence, taking that next vacation could do more good for your professional well-being than you think!
3. You are TOSSING and TURNING in bed at night
Having trouble sleeping is sign of stress, especially when you find yourself perpetually thinking about work, even while you are lying down in bed at night. This constant worrying prevents you from being able to relax and have a good night’s rest, something a holiday can fix!
Expedia.com.sg®’s 2017 Vacation Deprivation Study revealed that in Singapore, the most vacation-deprived industries are the Marketing & Media industry with 66% of workers feeling vacation deprived, followed by the Food & Beverage industry (62%) and the Transportation & Travel industry (56%). If you are working in one of these industries and are feeling the need to go for a holiday, why not choose a nearby destination such as Bali or Ho Chi Minh City, and leave your itinerary open? With readily-available online itineraries at the Expedia Singapore Travel Blog, you won’t ever need to be stressed out while planning your travels, and can have all the time in the world to kick back and relax.
4. You are PHYSICALLY WEARY
If you are feeling neck aches, headaches, dry eyes or plain fatigue as a result of prolonged hours at work, these signs indicate that you need to get away for a while to get your desk-strained body back into shape. Expedia.com.sg®’s 2017 Vacation Deprivation Study revealed that 66 % of working Singaporeans return to work from vacations feeling more relaxed, while 53% agree that vacations are important for their health and general well-being.
So why wait any longer? Hop onto the next plane out for a quick break – your body will thank you for it!
5. You are NEGLECTING YOUR FAMILY and loved ones
Have you been spending time with your family recently? Have you sat down and had a heart-to-heart chat with significant other or your child in the past three months? Don’t be too caught up with work that you forget to care for your core family relationships. Taking a vacation could be a good way for you to reconnect with your loved ones and family.
According to Expedia.com.sg®’s 2017 Vacation Deprivation Study, 44% of respondents agree that vacations are important for their relationship with their significant other, while 41% feel that going on a trip helps them feel better connected to their friends and families – key benefits that can be easily overlooked or ignored when full-time workers are busy chasing deadlines at work!
If you find yourself identifying with these signs, it’s high time you start planning for your next vacation. Not sure where to head to?
