Is there anything else our first Singapore idol can’t do? He sings, dance, acts and now he sells fried chicken as a side business. Chix Hot Chicken at Jalan Pisang is the brainchild of Taufik and his business partner, Ismail.

So when I heard the word Taufik, Spicy and chicken all in one sentence, I knew I had to make a trip down and have a taste of it. I meant the chicken, not Taufik.

If you’re wondering what is so special about the Chicken, it is the first Nashville-styled fried chicken in Singapore. There are three levels of spices added to the chicken: mild hotness, extra hotness and insane hotness.

Ismail tells me that the chicken is marinated 24 hours to make sure that all the flavours are fully absorbed.

The interiors can fit about 12 tables and there are more seats available outdoors should it get crowded.

The menu is not extensive and chicken is the only meat served here. The first in the menu is the original chicken made famous in Nashville, served with one of the world’s spiciest pepper, the ghost pepper.

The chicken is coated with their secret batter. I’ve asked them for the recipe, but it wouldn’t be a secret now would it?

After a thorough bath in batter, the chicken is then deep fried.

Now, this is where the magic happens. Depending on your order, the deep-fried chicken is coated with the different spices. By now, the whole kitchen smelt lovely.

I am a sucker when it comes to spicy food. The Nashville Hot Chicken Wings ($10.90) was served with three different level of hotness. I went in for the mild hotness and I was not disappointed. I felt the burn a few seconds after and my body started to sweat.

I moved to the extra hotness and my colleague went for the insane hotness. Have you seen a grown man cry? If you want to make your boyfriend cry, get him the insane hotness — our tongues were burning, mouth on fire and pits were sweating. It was an ugly sight for us but honestly, it was worth it for two insane writers who love spicy food.

I have to give credit when credit is due. The chicken skin is thin, crispy and piquant. The meat is succulent, fresh and tender.

That housemade sambal adds a little kick and greatly compliments the Nashville Hot Chicken Quarter ($9.90). Don’t be shy to ask for more sambal.

The Soul Sliders ($12.90) is one of our favourites. If you do not like spicy food, get the soul sliders. Take a good look at that chunky proportions too!

It comes in sets of two and for a slider, the portions are huge. Boneless chicken cooked to perfection, slaw, pink mayo and buttered buns.

Do not be afraid to get messy, sink your teeth into that beauty. Hear that crunch from the crumbs and smell that sweet success of you surviving the spicy chicken.

No free breakfast for you but if you’re lucky, you get to meet your idol and eat the chicken at the same time.

I am impressed with this small and humble eatery. While the menu is not extensive, it only means that they are focused on bringing you the best chicken. If you really like spicy food and game for an adventure, go for it. I can assure you will not be disappointed.

Expected Damage: $10 – $20 per pax
