If you’re looking for a place to grab a bite around Bukit Merah or when you’re done shopping at IKEA, Alexandra Village Food Centre is the place to go.

Even though it’s located away from most train stations, you’ll still find a crowd in the food centre and long queues at various stalls.

For those who want to suss out which stalls to queue up for, check out this list of 8 stalls worth the queue at Alexandra Village Food Centre to refuel after furniture shopping.

1. Dover Road Kai Kee Wanton Noodle 杜佛路佳記雲吞麵 (#01-09)

I grew up eating wonton noodles, so there’s something about this Cantonese dish that never fails to warm my heart. Dover Road Kai Kee Wanton Noodle 杜佛路佳記雲吞麵, as the name suggests, used to be located at the now-defunct Dover Road Market, before shifting over to the current location at Bukit Merah.

A plate of Wanton Noodles (S$2.50) comes with a generous portion of noodles, with slices of char siew strewn all over the plate.

It’s rare to find wonton noodles at this price, with such a generous serving. Everything about this bowl of noodles was near perfect: the noodles were springy, the char siew was tender and sweet, and the wontons were chewy and juicy. This dish is a must-try if you are around the area.

2. Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Claypot Laksa 徳普路真善美砂煲叻沙 (#01-75)

Most of the laksa that I’ve had came in a bowl, so enjoying it in a claypot was a new experience. It’s no wonder that Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Claypot Laksa 徳普路真善美砂煲叻沙 was awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand, with all the articles on display praising its delicious claypot laksa.

Their Claypot Laksa (S$4) looked and smelt like any ordinary laksa but what differentiates it from the rest is its extraordinary taste. The broth was light and mildly spicy, with an aromatic coconut milk aftertaste. Chicken slices, tau pok, and fish cakes swam in the mouth-watering broth.

The laksa remained hot throughout, thanks to the claypot. With every mouthful I took, I could taste that mouth-watering broth and the smooth, chewy noodles. Now I see why they were awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand!

3. AJ Delights (#01-82)

For people with a sweet tooth, AJ Delights is the store for you. Their freshly baked muffins are the perfect dessert to end off a meal.

AJ Delights’ muffins cost between S$2 – S$2.60 individually, and between S$12 – S$15.60 in boxes of six, depending on what you order. Their muffins are crusty on the outside, and soft on the inside.

Each muffin is generously packed with ingredients, making them worth the amount spent. While their muffins are not exactly cheap, I believe the quality ingredients made up for it.

4. Lau Phua Chay Authentic Roasted Delicacies 老半齋燒臘 (#01-20)

I’ve tried many plates of roasted char siew rice and I can say that Lau Phua Chay Authentic Roasted Delicacies 老半齋燒臘 does not disappoint. Their char siew and roasted duck are prepared in Teochew style, which means it’s on the sweeter side.

The Char Siew Rice (S$3.50) may not look photogenic, but it tasted heavenly. The char siew was blanketed with a layer sweet sauce, and the succulent meat had a right amount of fats which melted in my mouth. Is this worth the queue? Definitely!

5. Leon Kee Claypot Pork Rib Soup 諒記砂鍋當歸肉骨茶 (#01-18)

Bak kut teh is a soup that my grandma has cooked for me since I was a kid. This savoury, herbal, and peppery soup always bring good memories for me, and Leon Kee Claypot Pork Rib Soup 諒記砂鍋當歸肉骨茶 helped to rekindle that flame.

Their Pork Rib Soup (S$5) is known to be really peppery and herbal, which I absolutely love. The tender pork ribs slid off the bone with a gentle tug. You’ll want to order some rice to fully savour the broth. I had this on a rainy day, and this soup perked me right up.

6. Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice 紫金城 (#01-15)

If I can’t decide what to eat, I usually fall back on a simple plate of chicken rice, because this dish has a special place in my heart.

Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice 紫金城 has a rather straight-forward name, which makes me wonder how they stood out from other stalls. The answer was simple: they simply sold affordable good food.

I prefer the chicken to be served separately from the rice, and thankfully, that’s how they did it. The Chicken Rice (S$3) was fragrant, well-infused with chicken broth and garlic.

The chicken was smooth, and oozing with the savoury gravy. Unsure of what to eat at Alexandra Village Food Centre? Have a plate of chicken rice.

7. Xiang Jiang Soya Sauce Chicken 香江豉油鸡 (#01-77)

If soya sauce chicken is your thing, then Xiang Jiang Soya Sauce Chicken 香江豉油鸡 is the place to be. This stall was recommended by one of my friends, who said it’s worth the queue.

A plate of Soya Sauce Chicken Noodle (S$3.50) was good enough to make my day. The tender chicken slices and noodles soaked up the savoury gravy, allowing the dish to taste consistently well balanced.

8. Mr Avocado Exotic Juice (#01-19)

Probably one of the best avocado drinks that I’ve tried, Mr Avocado Exotic Juice is well-known to people living around Bukit Merah.

The Avocado Shake (S$3) was thick and creamy. There was a fine balance between the rich avocado blend and the gula melaka sweetener, and I loved how rich the flavours were. Avocado lovers, you know where to go next!
