Bukit Merah View Hawker Centre is where most taxi drivers congregate after their shifts. Even though it isn’t near any MRT stations, you can still find a substantial number of people queuing at the hawker stalls for their lunch or dinner.

With so many popular stalls, which one is worth queuing for? Here’s a list of 8 best hawker stalls to look out for during your visit to Bukit Merah View Hawker Centre.

1. Bukit Merah View Carrot Cake 红山景菜头粿 (#01-37)

Bukit Merah View Carrot Cake 红山景菜头粿 never fails to attract a crowd. Thankfully, when I was there, the queue wasn’t too long.

The Carrot Cake (S$3) contained some chye poh (preserved radish bits) which gave it a slight hint of saltiness. Since this dish is sweet by nature, the saltiness complemented the well-cooked Carrot Cake chunks. I like how the dish’s flavour was quite mild, and wasn’t too sweet nor too salty.

2. Happy Duck Braised Duck Rice & Kway Chap 滷鴨飯•粿汁 (#01-38)

Are you feeling down? Let Happy Duck Braised Duck Rice & Kway Chap 滷鴨飯•粿汁 bring you some happiness with its tender duck meat.

For the amount of meat given, including half an egg and tofu slices, the Duck Rice (S$3.50) is really worth it. The duck was tender and succulent, and the gooey gravy helped to enhance the flavour of the duck. The rice was also fluffy and slightly sticky, which I personally prefer.

3. Bukit Merah View Fishball Minced Meat Noodle 红山景鱼圆肉脞面 (#01-45)

This is one of the stalls I would patronise at Bukit Merah View Hawker Centre. Bukit Merah View Fishball Minced Meat Noodle 红山景鱼圆肉脞面 sells a wide range of noodles, from Mee Pok (S$3) to Laksa (S$3). I would typically get their Laksa because of their thick coconut  gravy.

What I absolutely loved is how the gravy is teeming with bits of shrimps and coconut milk. The gravy itself isn’t too spicy, but you can always stir in additional chilli to turn up the heat. Don’t forget to mix in the laksa leaf (Vietnamese coriander) to boost the flavour of the dish!

The vermicelli noodles were silky-smooth and they gave a generous amount of cockles too, which made each mouthful a spicy and savoury treat.

4. Sisaket Thai Food (#01-01)

You can definitely expect authentic Thai food coming from Thai-run Sisaket Thai Food. After I placed my order, a large group of office workers starting streaming in. With such authentic flavours, I can see why the stall is so popular.

I had the Phad Thai (S$4.50) and it instantly reminded me of my time in Bangkok. The sweet and sour flavours of the dish made my mouth water the moment I placed a mouthful of chewy noodles into my mouth. I just couldn’t stop after my first bite.

There were also bean sprouts mixed together with the noodles to give a little crunch to the dish.

5. R&D (#01-39)

Many of the stalls at Bukit Merah View Hawker Centre holds fond memories for me, and R&D is one of the stalls I would patronise with my parents for breakfast.

The Wanton Noodle (S$3) came with a generous portion of sliced char siew, and it was comforting to know that it tasted exactly the same as it did in the past.

The noodles were springy and chewy, just the way I remembered it to be. This paired well with the sweet char siew slices, which had fats on the rim that melted in my mouth.

The wanton pieces were soft, thanks to the thin wanton skin and minced meat filling. I found the dish to be quite light, making it a good breakfast meal for the early risers.

6. 71 Lor Mee 鹵麵 (#01-71)

There’s just something about this starchy dish that makes my mouth water. 71 Lor Mee 鹵麵 is one of those stalls that attract a long line of hungry customers during the peak lunch period.

One bowl of Lor Mee (S$3) is more than enough to satisfy a hungry soul. The thick and starchy gravy clung on to the yellow noodles, ensuring customers get to taste the warm and savoury gravy. For those looking for some crunch, there are also bits of crispy lard in the gravy.

7. 786 Char Kway Teow 786 炒粿条 (#01-28)

786 Char Kway Teow 786 炒粿条 serves my favourite go-to dish whenever I find myself unsure of what to eat. This mildly sweet dish never fails to satisfy my hunger pangs.

There was a generous portion of cockles served on this reasonably-priced plate of Char Kway Teow (S$3). The noodles were smooth and chewy, with bits of eggs mixed into the dish.

The sweetness of the Char Kway Teow was on point, but doesn’t overwhelm the taste of the cockles and noodles. If you are feeling adventurous, you can add even more cockles and request for more chilli to spice up the dish.

8. Chai Chuan Tou Yang Rou Tang 柴船头羊肉汤 (#01-51)

If you want to eat at Chai Chuan Tou Yang Rou Tang 柴船头羊肉汤, be prepared to queue, because it has recently earned a spot on the Michelin Bib Gourmand 2018.

The Mutton Soup With Rice (S$4.40) contained a modest portion of mutton, so tender that it effortlessly slid off the bone. The peppery soup had a distinct mutton aroma, with underlying fragrances of coriander and pepper. Not to worry, the Mutton Soup was not as spicy as it looks, so customers with delicate taste buds can still enjoy this dish.
